Hello .......A few questions on this ob i found ....model no..VE140TLEID. The power head is in pieces but looks like the ob is complete top to bottom.... can the surface rust on the cylinders be cleaned up with a hone or should i rebore ?$$$$ There is no visable scoring on any of the cyl walls.......pistons did have some scoring on the sides .new ones would prob be in order anyway bearings etc etc ...the only thing i noticed with the crank was 2 blue coloured rings around where the top split sleeve centre bearing rides ......would this be a major concern? all the journals looked fine no side or surface wear ....i think i can get this ob fairly cheap but im sure it will cost $$$$ to put it all back together...thats if everything else is ok ....thoughts suggests much needed on this one .thks ........Leo

Re: next project?

blue means hot at one time. new crank, or possible turn and oversize bearings.

Re: next project?

As long as the surface of the crank is smooth and round, no problem. From what you've described I'd guess they were using a less than desirable oil. I bet they purchased on $$, not quality.

Anyway, a 91 140 is an excellent motor. If you're going to buy new pistons, don't even think about not boring it. The expensive part is the piston, not the machining.

Here's a couple things I'd do (done it before) if it were me.

Since we're getting all new pistons anway, get the pistons from a 93 & newer V6. They're the same basic piston, just lighter. Yes, they have finger port holes and your cylinders don't but it doesn't matter.

If you could find some, and they're not that hard to find, I'd use the rods from a 93 & newer V6 too. Again, they're lighter. Don't go over 9300 rpm. If you're going over 9300, stick with the heavier rods you have.

The lighter pistons and rods will let the motor idle unbeliveably smooth.

Next, get rid of the power boost cooling valve. Look up a 93 V4 and use the t-stat covers, springs and gasket. You can then do away with all those ugly hoses and that valve. The t-stat assembly you have will work, just unscrew the rubber gasket and throw it away.

Sounds like a good project. You;ll be amazed at the difference of power (torque) between a crossflow and the looper.

Phew!!!!!!! ...DH Ur sendin chills down my back with excitement......LOL. Right now im speechless . Ive been running this ob thru my head all day and night as its a big job for a backyarder slash first year marine mech. Oh!!... Back to the OB. The surface was nice and clean and smooth other than the blue rings .It didnt seem to be out of round or warped from , no specs taken yet....DH as for the area that carries the load for that upper main , is there a chance that it could have now been distorted from the heat? .... to many thoughts and questions goin on right now ...9300rpm ..lol wohooooooo!!!!!!!! might need wings for my boat . thks

Re: next project?

The area around the center main (block and front half) should be smooth. If there is any damage or uneven-ness (is that a word?) then we'll have to address that. As long as that area is OK, we're good to go. The locating pin should be slightly above the surface.

Re: next project?

The top main is in the top cap which is removable. If that bearing is loose in the cap we need to repalce it. A good used one will work just fine. If the top of the crank is discolored some, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as the crank surface is smooth and round.
