i bought new NGK plugs for my 1991 johnson 115 v4. they had champions before. I assumed NGKs were the best from experience with other motors but i read somewhere here that johnson prefers champions, any thoughts?

All I can say is my 1988 60hp Johnson came with NGKs in it when I bought it from a Mercury dealer, he put NGKs in it because thats what he had in stock. It ran great with them, when the time came I replaced them with Champions, I could tell no difference at all, just changed the plugs as part of annual maintainence. NGK plugs are a good brand plug, IMHO

Your motor was built and engineered to be run on Champion QL77JC4's. NGK's work well for certain motors, but they are a different plug none the less, for numerous reasons that we wont get into, and should not be run in your motor. I would run the JC4's in that 4 banger

Ditto. Run the Champ's as suggested. It all has to do with calibration and combustion temps. Some OMC motors are a bit more sensitive than others to that. Your crossflow is somewhat forgiving but I'd still run what it was designed for. Especially with todays fuel and especially if you're running something other than 87 octane.

Check out the cost of a powerhead or even a single piston. Is it worth the risk?

As stated above there are many reasons to run champions. As stated the possible damages far outway any reason you may have for trying the NGK's. I used NGK's in my motorcycle 75 Kawasaki 900 as well as several cars and always liked the performance. Outboards are a different breed.

My OMC dealer swears that older JohnnyRudes run badly on NGKs. His recommendation to me has always been to run Champions. My position for supporting his opinion is anecdotal only. I can't give you the technical reason why, but I can tell you that I put a set of NGKs in my 1972 65hp with poor results. As soon as I put Champions back in it, it ran well again.
