Its just genetic. No matter how hard you try, you can only lower it by a very small percentage. Thanks God we have drugs to help.

I just hope 'you got that insurance'. That prescription can run over $120 for 60 pills.

What are the side effects? Some of those drugs they advertise on the tube...the side effects are worse than the problem to begin with. Probably not with Cholesterol, don't want to be messing with the ticker. Especially with heart disease running in your family.

Re: niaspan

Hey Crabby, I didn't want to take the pills either. My doc gave me 3 months to lower it. At the time it was about 260 and he said he wanted it below 200. I started cleaning up my act and basically gave up red meat. It went to 240. I went on the pills and it dropped to 180/190 and I'm back eating what I want instead of a steady diet of yard bird. I take Pravachol. They may try different dosages until they get it right but don't sweat it. Do what the Doc says and give yourself a chance to skip the heart attack, they aren't any fun at all.

Re: niaspan

crabby,
looked it up in herself's drug book, it says
ADVERSE REACTIONS' Most reactions are dose-dependent.
CV: excessive peripheral vasodilation (especially niacin), hypotension, atrial fibrillation, arrhythmias.
GI: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, possible activation of peptic ulceration, epigastric or substernal pain.
The niaspan is listed under niacin (nicotinic acid, vitamin B3) There is other info there as to dosage, action..etc...
Thats all I can find for you. (don't ask what them big words mean, I just typed it from the book... :D
