I have heard of people nickel welding a cracked block is this good. My crack is on the cylinder wall between the push rods, under the intake manifold. not on the outside of the block can this work.

Hello, If you have a crack on the outside of a cylinder wall I would think that it has affected the other side when it cracked through. If this is the case the inside of the cylinder would not have the proper finish and would wreck the rings on that piston. You could nickel weld a block but I don't think you have damage that is practical to fix by welding. If I am understanding you correctly, you have a crack in a bad spot for repairs. I think your only option here is either a new block with you swapping everything over or a replacement long or short block (replacement engines). Maybe you can post a picture here so we can see the exact spot you are referring to?

If the block is unusable you have nothing to lose by trying. I have welded many manifolds and one starter mounting ear. If it is a small crack you probably won't have a problem. I usually grind a V and just make small welds, hammer the weld gently with the pointed end of the hammer. Then weld a little more. Make sure you cover everything up so you don't get splatter in the engine. Can you run the engine at all to see if its usable if you do fix it. I'm guessing it was freeze damage?

Short Answer is NO..............

If the Crack is Actually in the cylinder wall There's Absolutely No Way it's going to be Welded.........

If it's Cracked between the push rods ,+ the Lifter Vally, under the intake manifold ......
You Might be able to Weld it,
But, It's Possible it'll Still Leak into the pushrod passage,+ Destroy the motor.......
And, If the Weld Leaks, It'll Fill the Oil Pan with water,+ Destroy the motor........
And, It'll be Impossible to contain All the Grinding Dust,+ Welding Slag...... That'll Rip the Bearings out of your motor in Minutes.......
Unless you Totally Dissemble the engine.....And, When you've gotten that far, a New Block makes more Sense......

I've also welded several engines,+ manifolds, etc....
There's No Way, I'd attempt a repair like yours.....
It has Failure written all over it...........

If the crack is in the cyl wall, you could go with a sleave... But then you would have to pull the block to have it machined.
