Nicks on crankshaft, 86' Johnson 110 Rebuild

Doing a rebuild due to an overheat and I found two journals with nicks. I don't know if they're from old age but I suspect they're because of rust from when I pulled the left side cylinder head off to inspect and just put just rags in the holes like an idiot instead of putting the head back. The cylinders rusted so maybe moisture got to the crank too as there's at least one needle with some kind of "crust" on it.

I can feel the nicks with my fingernail. I sanded over them and when I roll a needle over it it doesn't catch luckily but I'm worried if the journals will flake off. Any experience on this appreciated.

I'm glad you asked that. Now I see both rods have nicks too smh.

My original plan was two pistons, rings for all four and needles.

Sorry for not stating in OP but I don't want to put a ton of money into this. Right now I'm figuring about $500 including miscellaneous things for the job etc. If I polish the crank and hone the rods can I get any use out of this engine in your opinion?

Not really. Houston, so bay fishing I don't have to worry about being stranded off shore. I could do a used crank & rods but if I go that far I might as well do the other two pistons and if I go that far I might as well do the three crank bearings. I need to make a decision on where the cutoff point is on this job.

That is pitting from water...I highly suggest crank and rods be replaced and upper/lower/center bearings inspected .Might as well do it right since you have it down. Have you "miked" bores as waste of $$ putting new pistons in worn out holes.

I keep finding more pits. Upper main has two rollers with pits.

I bit the bullet and bought a used crank and ordered all three crank bearings new. To lessen the blow, Instead of buying two new pistons and two rods, I found a sweet deal on three used pistons with rods that look surprisingly great. Long story short I can squeeze this our for about $650 when it's all said and done. It'll be a month or so but I hope to share the complete job. Thank you all for the replies.

Looks mean nothing....you just bought rods as pistons are used and worn. Good luck on your experimentation as this is NOT a rebuild as originally posted.

I wasn’t in the camp of used pistons until I kept finding more bad parts trust me, but it worked out price wise. I’ll be sure to measure them when they arrive. As long as I have new rings and a good hone job what are the concerns? We’re talking about an engine I don’t plan on using for more than two to three years and I don’t take the boat out a lot, maybe 5-7 times a year.

Not a matched set as one in middle is a Siezco...is it a standard size?

Yes standard. Will oem rings work on the different one?

No----- factory piston rings do not fit on a Wiseco .------Post some picture of ring grooves especially the one on the right.----3 pictures of each piston.------It is not a good idea to put new rings on a used OMC piston like that.-----Some will argue that fact !!

If you decide to use these pistons make sure they are properly assembled to the rods.-----Hint----- look for an oil hole at the wrist pin.

I ordered OEM rings so I won't use the Wiseco... No biggie, I only needed two pistons/rods.

Be sure to measure the skirts on those pistons before you install, dont go by the looks.
