Just got back from the most humbling experience of my life. For all who havent seen my other post I update you real quick, shopped around, took some advice bought a good-fair boat, got it home and found it wasnt what it was.

So I decided to take it for a little trip today. Came off the trailer easy, idled for a good 15 minutes, went extra slow down the intracoastal waterwy while my bro tied some rigs for another 15. Then when I revved up and took off and drove for about 3-4 mins. I looked at the gauges.

There is no tach so I didnt go completely wide open I stayed at med. med.-high. Anyways, I looked back at the temp (mounted on transom) and it said 200. The guy said it would be between 180-200 so I was concerned. I looked back again and it was at 260!!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I killed the engine and threw the anchor. I let it cool down and it didnt want to even think about cranking back up. I got towed back to the ramp and the friggin trim/tilt wouldnt work. What a nightmare. Any ideas or suggestions on what this might be?

Supposed to be a 1986 Chevy 350 engine with a 1970 OMC Outdrive http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1664012#post1664012

First off, it's an almost 40 year old stinger outdrive with a remanned old style block Chevy V8 (and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that type engine, I love em)
The drive is a different process altogether.
I have been working at a place that works on these things. They are a pain to work on and if in salt water, ......... have mercy on your soul .
The worst thing that happens is holes corrode thru the water passages just inside of where the pivots are for tilting the drive. Then (Especially on V8's) the lower housing (don't know the correct name for it yet) where the end of the raw water pump goes has seals and normally wears out with a groove in the bearing surface. When this happens you get an overheat.
There is only a finite number of used (not used up) parts left.

PS: Had to go soak my finger tips in used Mercruser gear lube to get the feeling back after even typing about a stringer drive.

Don, you have actually made me laugh!

Oh and Ocean, I am sorry if in your other thread where I said that engine is not a Vortec made it sound like that means it's junk. It isn't a bad engine, as DonS points out. It just isn't what the guy who sold you the boat said it was.
