The timing marks are on both the cam (driven) gear, and crank (drive) gear. They should align when the belt is installed.

This is an interference-fit motor, so you do not want to guess, as that could result in a bent valve or worse.

A Factory service manual is available from any Nissan/Tohatsu dealer, and well worth having for work like this.

Re: nissan 18hp four stroke timing gear marks

thank you for the reply.i have looked at the nissan book, but the book does not show how the crank cam and the valve cam marks line up.i lined up the dot on the valve cam with the arrow on the case next to it.i then faced the dot on the driveshaft cam toward the valve cam dot, because there no arrows or dots on the case around the driveshaft cam. the belt slide on without any movement of ether cam. but i don't what to take a chance and test it and hurt the valves.hopefully, someone out there knows the answer. i would bet the 9.9s and the 15s are the same.thanks fred

ok boys i found the answer to the problem. the dot on the cam lines up with the hole next to it on the casing. this all lines up with the valve cam dot which faces the arrow on the casing in front of it. thats how you set the timing marks on a 2006 nissan 4 stroke. fredfish
