I have a 92' 8 hp Nissan. I had to get into my lower unit and replace a few things and upon reassemby the shifting is reversed. Forward is now reverse and reverse is now forward. I have taken it back apart and checked it over and cannot find what I have done wrong. I must have goofed something up during reassemby. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Graig

Did you have the powerhead off? If so, did you reverse the shift rod arm inside the exhaust housing?

I never removed the power head. I think I have gone crazy. The only thing I I diassembled was the lower unit. I did not remove the the clutch dog. I just replaced a bearing and reassembled. It just doesn't seem possible for this to be happening. I think I must be missing something small.

Re: Nissan 8 HP shifting reversed

What bearing did you replace? Did you seat the new bearing fully?

The shifter operates a wedge that pushes on the push rod, that forces the clutch dog aft when the rod is pushed down, and allows it to return by spring force when raised. So it's pretty much impossible to get the shift pattern reversed at the LU. The pinion gear operates both fwd and rev bevel gears all the time, even in neutral, and the clutch dog just selects which gear engages the prop shaft.

Are you able to get into both fwd and rev gears, with neutral in between? The motor turns clockwise (as viewed from above the powerhead), and the prop turns clockwise (as viewed from astern) when in fwd. These are RH props. Maybe you have just mistaken the direction of rotation of the prop.

did you remove the shift cables? (coming off the control box)

maybe they are backward. (reverse cable is pulling forward lever)

I think that would cause this issue.

I get forward neutral and reverse shifting. Bearing is seated fully. I must be just mistakeing the direction of the prop.

In regards to the cables. I have none.

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.
