My 1992 18 hp Nissan's starter rope is not engaging the shaft to turn the motor when pulled. Sometimes it has slipped in the past for several pulls and then it would turn the motor. Today it quit engaging at all. When it engages the motor starts right up. Does anyone have the info or video I need to repair this?
Thanks in advance!

Remove recoil assy (3 side bolts and starter lock shaft link), flip it back and clean with acetone, thinner the spring (ratchet guide) that slides inside the middle drum (starter shaft) groove when cord is pulled.

If issue continues remove spring and bent it slight in at both sides, not the middle part though with a plier as to increase the load on the drum when cord is pulled, assemble back and test if OK.

This ratchet mechanism must work completely clean and dry, don't put any grease or oil on it whatsoever..

Success! Thank you very much! I bought this boat/motor combination used about five years ago. It now works better than it ever did.
Thanks again!
