hi.. i have a 1990 ns40c nissan and this motor is very hard to start... runs great in the driveway...in the lake...about ready to sink it... i have replaced the spark plugs as per owners manual.. started burning real gas...once started and warmed up.. it will stop are start with no problem... but if it cools down... wont hit a lick... had to use trolling motor more times than i would like. i've read all kinds of post... fuel pump.. carbs...ect... carb has been cleaned...fuel filter..cleaned...the only thing i havnt touched is the fuel pump... does anyone have any ideas on what i could do to make this a reliable motor???

Is the choke working? What is the compression?

yes the auto choke is working when you push in the key....not sure of the compression.... i've replace plugs from br8 to br7 as per owners manual and have filled tank with prem. gas... have not tried this in the lake ...weather in arkansas... but it started fine in the drive way... is there anything else that i should do or change???

When the engine has started and warmed up will it stay runing or tend to shut itself off ? when cold start must follow some starting procedures, same when engine has completely cooled down as in most 2 stroke engines.

yes once the motor has started and warmed up it will stay running and will run fine... once its warmed up if i turn motor off it will start back without any trouble... when cold starting i do choke the motor until it starts then release the key... but after motor has ran for a while and then cools down... its hard to restart... any ideas???? thank you...

A cold 40c will need some choking even after it fires, until it warms up some. Also, if the carb is even a little varnished, it will be running a little lean. That will not be much of an issue after warm up, but will be very pronounced when cold, since richer mixtures are needed during warm-up. For proper starting technique, see your owner's manual at http://www.nissanmarine.com/tech_talk/owners_manuals.html

Yes, will completely agree on that, just for the record.

Is your solenoid plunger working in/out proprly when pushed by finger or sticking inside solenoid sometimes, if so, check aligment or slight lube plunger. When re starting cold for second time you'll need to repeat complete cold start procedures.

For cold re starts try raising warm up lever to 3/4 or at fully opened position, push key in to operate choke solenoid and without releasing key rotate ignition to start the motor, repeat at short intervals if engine does not start at first or second intent, once engine is on release key, let warm for 30 seconds, close lever and that's it.
