I just bought a new Garmin 740s Chart plotter and would like to link it to the engine in my Crownline. How do I find out if my engine is NMEA 200 Certified??? It's a Volvo Penta 5.7 GI-F

Your engine would need to be equipped with EVC (Electronic Vessel Control) designed into the engine and boat, to have the NMEA connection with adapter.

Re: NMEA 2000 Certified?

Don, thanks for the information. I've contacted my VP dealer and am waiting to see if my engine has this or if it can be added. It looks like building an NMEA 2000 network isn't too difficult. At the very least I'm going to buy the fuel flow sensor to try and optimize my fuel usage.

If 5.7GI-F is the full model number of your engine, it is not an EVC equipped engine.

I have 5.7 Gi-G engines. A friend has 5.7 GXi-F engines. We have been able to interface them with raymarine displays using maretron j2k100 j1939 to nmea 2000 interface modules. If you're still interested in doing this I can tell you what we did. The process should be similar for Garmin.

Please don't post to old threads with no activity for 90 days or more. Both of your posts are to dead threads. Both threads are especially painful.

Ok as of two weeks ago I needed the same answer for a motor and after much reading and study will ignore no posting and post for those who still seek the same answer.

So if you did not get your answer then please note (also others seeking the same info please read.)
basically engines are not NMEA certified. Most likely they are CAN bus enabled if new enough, CAN bus is very very close to NMEA2000 in data flow and messages, there are many buses that follow the NMEA , CAN, RS485 type signaling and messages format. So with a proper gateway can exchange data. If your engine has a CAN bus from there you can buy a gateway that will take CAN bus to NMEA 2000. Look for a CAN connector on your engine.
NMEA.org list all certified devices and parts for NMEA use.

If your engine is not CAN bus enabled then you can use stand alone NMEA certified sensors to read various engine parameters, fuel flow, oil pressure, alternator voltages, etc.
