I found this little device at home depot.

http://www.gomjsi.com/hr/

It offers two flush levels for your toilet. For the non-solids, using the light flush saves over a half toilet tank of water on each flush.

It installed very easily and works great. I am not advertising, but I bought one and thought it was a great product.

I have one installed in our guest bathroom on our main floor. I have four kids and our toilets flush a lot.

I've seen those in airports for a couple of years. Sounds like a good idea to me - especially with a large family.

Had double flush toilets installed in both my bathrooms when my house was built. In this part of Texas they are mandatory in new construction and manufacturing. Only one handle; one flip, light flush, hold it for full flush. Work great.

Save a lot of water.

I will stay at the government mandated 1.6 GPF so I don't have to retrain my whole family and guests on which button to press......I don't like toilet plungers! Even at 1.6 sometimes I have to keep my fingers crossed.

They use those dual flush toilets all over Europe here, great idea, not to mention that the standard European toilet has much less water in the bowl. Less water in the bowl is great for water conservation, but bad for skid marks.

if you get the flapper with the float on the chain it does basically the same thing for much cheaper. push like normal for a light flush, push and hold for the heavy stuff.

What is interesting is that toilets are probably one of the least water users in your whole house. Get rid of the lawn if you really want to save water or shorter showers.

Re: No Brainer way to save a bunch of water

I don't have automatic sprinklers and by nature of lazyness, my lawn does not get watered unless by nature. But you are right that those auto matic sprinklers definately put out a lot of water..

As for showers, my three kids take showers like a washing machine.. Fill, agitate, spin, drain, rinse, repeat.. I have often thought there is a market for a remote control attached to a valve on the hot water line. When the kids 5 minutes are up, hit the remote and cold shower. After the first couple of showers, they will get the timing right..

With the number of people in my house, that main floor bath get all the tinkle jobs. In a given day that thing gets flushed at least twenty times. Probably closer to thirty. I would say 90% are yellow vs brown. ~15 gallons a day is a significant amount of water.

Even cheaper than that device is what we have at our cottage in Maine with a dug well (limited water supply).

It's a hand written note left on top of the toilet tank in a plastic baggy which states "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down" Some guests have a hard time accepting this though....:D;)

I may have to look into one of these. It would save water when the mellow NEEDS to be flushed.

A properly designed, maintained and timed irrigation system encourages water savings because water is delivered more precisely, and the timers control the length of time they're running. When we had to manually position sprinklers, I know we used more water because they were difficult to set accurately, and it was pretty easy to forget how long they'd been running. The controler is programed to work within our summertime watering restrictions. I'd never go back to the manual sprinklers, and I've had one total lawn replacement due to extremely dry conditions, that cost more than my sprinker system.

in the shower i have made it a habit to get wet, turn off the water to wash then back on to rinse. i did not notice a change in my water bill when i started this.
