Can the engine be started without the outdrive in place? I finally got everthing hooked back up to the engine, cleaning wire contacts as I went. I wanted to turn it over while the outdrive was at the shop, but when I turned the key, nothing happened except that the guages moved. No click from the solenoid. I put the shift lever to the neutral position, but still no click. I don't have a safety kill switch so I know its not that. I am thinking perhaps the neutral position safety lockout switch might be the culprit, but then, I don't know. Where should I start checking? 1971 18'Trisonic, Ford 302, 188hp, Pre-Alpha drive.

Does the relay need to be grounded to the engine? I ask because I had painted the mounting plate at the back of the riser that it bolts to. The engine diagragm shows an insulating plate between the relay bracket and the mounting plate (NLA) but it was not present when I disassembled. Is it a thermal insulating plate or electrical?

I have 12v at the hot side of the solinoid, but nothing on the other side. I tried jumping the hot side to the yellow wire, still nothing. Could I try jumping hot side to other side. Is there a safe way to wire the starter directly to see if it will spin? How do I access the neutral safety switch?

Even the ford has a solenoid. Since you have jumped the "hot" side to the yellow and it didn't crank, then you either have no ground at the solenoid, or a bad solenoid.

BUT... first check the battery cables. ( remember there are 4 battery cable ends. ( 2 on the battery and 2 on the engine ))

Re: No clicks

Thank you for the input! I think/hope my problem might be that the solenoid is not grounded at the mounting plate at the end of the manifold because of paint. (see previous post above)

Re: No clicks

I just ran a jumper from the solenoid mounting bracket to a good ground and the engine cranked fine. So, it looks like a little paint removing is in order....if I can get a wrench on the mounting bolts!
