Pulled the head and the piston and clylinder wall looks good and fairly clean.
Recommendations? Should I re-ring it?, and if so, what's the easiest way to
get the psiton out? Thanks.

Howdy, Force.

If you plan to work on your engine you must get a manual. It will answer many of your questions.

Good luck. :)

JB's right, A manual is worth its weight in gold.

I just rebuilt the powerhead on a 1985 75hp Mercury. The manual is a life saver, it walks you through the entire process and gives specs. on assembling the motor, a must have to do it right.

Tight Lines and Solid Hooksets. :D

Thanks for the tips. Will soak everything in B-12 or decarb, and replace the head gasket for one last try before I go to work. Runs ok/good at better than idle speed. Guess the engine speed helps it gain some compression.

Good luck... but Force are bad about breaking rings... Most likely what happend to you... do this... Start with the top piston.. Rotate the flywheel to bring the piston to the top of the cylinder.. You should be able to move the piston sideways a little in the bore.. what you are doing is compressing the rings back into the groove... this shows that they haven't locked into the groove... Do to all the cylinders... when you get to the bottom one you probably won't see any play cause the rings "usually" freeze in the grooves when they brake... Sounds like the motor got hot....
