I replaced the impeller recently and now the shift control wont go in forward gear. I didn't move the shift shaft but I think it might not be engaging. not sure. any ideas ? Thanks to all who reply. Glenn

The shift shaft did not engage the same way it came apart, no big deal, pull it apart and line it up correctly. Go enjoy the water.

I'm anything BUT an expert but I did experience a similar condition when I did the same thing. Try removing the lower again and reinserting with the engine upside down.
Apparently the shaft for the shifter can fall to the side and not engage properly if the lower is installed with the engine laying down??

I learned this the hard way also. I used vise grips on the driveshaft and the shift shaft to figure out where reverse and neutral are. Then shift the lower unit and the control box into either neutral or reverse, then mate up the shafts. Hope this helps.

ok if it is a old merc you need to put the control in forward than you remove the lower unit. You have already taken it off so put it forward and find the forward gear on the gear box you will have to turn the drive shaft in a clockwise dirrection and push the two together.
