Ok, so i got my motor back which is an '89 Johnson 25hp rope tiller, it had the skeg redone. Totally my fault, i assumed they refilled the gear oil, and i failed to double check in my haste to hit the water. I got a 1/4 mile out and started to hear a whirring noise from under the water. I immediately suspected the gear oil but decided to limp it another 1/4 mile to a marina where they hoisted it up on a lift and a checked it out. Yup, they failed to fill it. There was SOME in there, maybe an ounce but it didnt smell burned or blackened. Also no metal shavings or anything else wierd. I refilled the unit using synthetic Johnny oil as always and put her back in the water. She shifted fine and the sound was gone. The guy at the dock said i got lucky. I continued to run it expecting it to blow up but it never did. Top speed was normal by my gps, and the hole shots were normal. No different sounds or anything abnormal. I re-replaced the gear oil when i got it home, no metal or burned smells. Question is, did i get lucky? Should i take it in for a tear down, or just watch it?

Re: No gear oil!

If I paid someone for a repair that required the lower unit oil to be drained and they did not refill it, I would take it back to them and expect that they tear it down and inspect it and show me the internals at no charge to me. And then they should assemble it with new seals and o-rings at no charge.

Yeah, putting the oil back in is part of the work. I'd take it back and make them do an inspection on it free of charge, and make sure they put the oil back in.

If you take your car in to have a transmission replaced or repaired, would you just live with it if they didn't put fluid in it? I would also be checking fluid level for a period of time after knowing their lack of skill.

Granted im going to have some words but for right now, do i need to cancel a weekend of near shore boating, and in all likelyhood a whole week? Or in peoples opinion is the probability it would be ok for a weekend? Im looking for similar stories of survivability.

Wait a minute and let me find my x-ray glasses.(haha)
It's impossiable to tell weather there is any damage without tearing it down.

Keep your ears open and your eyes on the g/c oil. I would not take a wheel barrow back to the place you had it for the repair much less letting them take your g/c apart.

Hey now, those suckers can be complicated .........depending on how many drinks you may have had, they might forget to put air in the tire though.
