no go in gear?

OK guys..here's my problem..I was out today and my motor started doing the bump...it's only done it once or twice before. As I was heading in the motor just started revving with no propulsion. I throttled back and put it in neutral, and when I put it back in gear it would go...but VEERRRYYY slowly. I ended up getting a tow from Sea Tow ( I'm a member...NOW :( ) and got it out of the water. I figure my lower end is shot. Am I correct? Do I need to replace the whole thing or can I buy the parts I need seperate?

EDIT: the prop will turn...and rather quickly..but it's like a slipping clutch...it won't pull.

Re: no go in gear?

it sounds like you spun the prop. it is built with an inner and outer metal hub, with a rubber bushing in between. this bushing probably died. draw a line across the prop hubs. try to give it a go spin in the water. if the lines are still line up. it's not the prop. what motor is this on?

Sounds like a possible worn clutch dog/forward gear. Goes into reverse OK? BTW, the clutch dog/forward gear failure occurs from "gentle" shifting. Motor should be shifted firmly and promptly and shouldn't be making a clicking noise while shifting. Or as Tash points out, a spun prop hub.

Based on the evidence provided I would agree with Tashasdaddy... spun prop most likely. You won't be out a whole lot of money with this. If it shifts well out of water on earmuffs and the prop is spinning quickly without load it's probably just a spun prop.

It's on an '85 115 Evinrude.

Nope...no reverse either...same thing...motor revs but goes nowhere.

And I learned from you guys not to ***** foot around when putting it in gear..I put it in and out of gear quickly. I KNOW the lower unit has gotta be gone through soon because of the bump...but I was hoping to get through the summer with it before I have that done. :(

Re: no go in gear?

Well yet again you guys have come to the rescue! I figured I was done for the season because I simply can not afford to have the lower unit gone through right now.
I went out and took a look at the prop.Easy to remove....took out the cotter pin and turned the nut by hand! 3 or 4 very gentle taps with a rubber mallet and the prop came off in 2 pieces...the prop..and the rear metal collar was still on the shaft...with some goo that USED to be a rubber gasket!
Thanks again guys! You've saved me a bundle of dough! You guys are all top notch!

Re: no go in gear?

the prop probably bumped something in the water, or the bushing going made the bump sound. anyway the bushing did what it was designed to do. it save the lower unit. check you lower oil, and watch for water intrusion. order a bunch of the washers for the drain and vent plugs, as they need to be changed everytime you remove the plugs. 99% chance everything is good. now you know why we carry spare props. the prop can be rebuilt and reconditioned, for a spare.
