my 1984 force 85 horse outboard recently lost high end power while the throttle is wide open. it still runs great at idle and slow speeds, but now wont get up on plane and goes about 10 mph. i have a new gas tank and lines and it has been running great all summer until this happened two weeks ago. is this a fuel pump problem? any help would be great. thanks...

Re: no high end power

Could be a lot of things. Have you changed the fuel filter? It sounds like you aren't getting enough fuel somewhere along the line, since it idles ok, it's probably not electrical. If it's not the fuel filter you may have a clog in on of your carbs. Try pumping the fuel line pump while the motor is running and see if that helps. If so, it is definitely the fuel, and likely the fuel filter or equivalent. Pumping like this probably won't help a clog in the carb. Rebuilding carbs isn't too hard, but you will definitely need a manual.

Larry, just a shot in the dark but, is it possible that an ignition advance lever or rod came loose and you're not getting spark advance?

Larry,

It sounds to me like you started hitting on 2 cylinders instead of 3. Pull your plugs and see if one is fouled. I would also check the compression just to make sure that is fine.

I have a 1972 85HP Chrysler and it does the same thing. When a plug fouls on mine, it idles great and everything but top speed is about 10mph.

Shane
