Hi all,

The model # plate is not on the side of a motor (65HP Johnson) I just bought. I would like to know how to find out the year of manufacture as I have to troubleshoot why it is stuck in forward.
It says on the engine hood "Loop Charged" and "Hydro Electric Drive" and is a three cylinder one.
I checked the wires heading down the leg, with the shift in nuetral there is one positive and with the shift in reverse both are positive (ie have power) so I think that rules out the motor side of things. Is there a problem in the control box do you think? I will say though, with the hood off the motor, when I have the key in power on position (position before you would turn the motor over) I cannot hear anything clicking in when I move the shift out of nuetral. Only new to outboards and would appreciate any help.

Cheers

Hi Me-again
I can't tell what the exact mod# would be. It sounds to me like you may have a 1972-73 model. Troudle shooting is the same for all the models of this size, type and era. If you have power to both shift wires, then the problem is not in the control. Have you drained your L/U? I'm sure you know to use tpye c gear oil for this type of L/U.The motor has to be running in order to shift. The Clymer manual B734 should cover your model nicely.

Thanks for that. Have changed the gear oil, however it was happening before the oil change. It wasworking fine (shifting between neutral, reverse and forward and then it stopped). Its got me buggered. I may have a look at the loom and troubleshoot from the motor wiring back? Don't really know where to start.
Thanks anyway

Me_Again , You can look on the engine block for a silver welsh plug that looks like a freeze plug for a model number.Post it if you find it and someone can help you with the exact year of your motor.

These are the 1972-73 model numbers you are looking for on the silver welch plug:

65ESLR72 65 hp 1972
65ES72-65ESL72 65 hp 1972

65ESR73-65ESLR73 65 hp 1973
65ES73-65ESL73 65 hp 1973

(VX-14 65 hp 1968 and VXH-14 65 hp 1968)

Hi all and alcan,

My email is scottsomerville1@hotmail.com.
Further to the message. I'm sure I have singled the problem out to the solenoid that must be in the lower leg, as I have no lifting gear the boat will have to go to the engine doctor.

Cheers

Hi Me_Again.

Don't know what you would need lifting gear for. The lower unit will come off with out lifting the motor. If you have any mechanical ability, get a manual and go for it yourself. But I would read the manual throughly before hand. You might find out that it can be a fun type thing to do. Let ya learn a little about your engine in the process. Don't hurt when yer on the water. :p :p :D
