No Idle Caused By Loose Center Magnet

I'm posting this to maybe help some other poor individual like me that this happens to. I have been posting about a 92 60HP 3Cyl that wont idle but will run only if you push the throttle halfway and then at speeds around 1800 RPM. Have checked and rechecked everything I knew. However sometimes the timing would jump around. Some mornings it would crank right up and run correctly. Sometimes you would have to turn the small timer minimum retard screw in or out to idle at correct RPM. Last year, I had to install a longer idle timing screw to get the timing at 2 BTDC. Suspected the powerpack, stator or timer base. All tested Ok, but the stator was melted. I replaced the powerpack and stator with new. Still would not run because of timing too far retarded. Chased ghosts in the top carb, because it was sneezing indicating to me that that cylinder was running lean. <br />I knew something had to be causing the timing to not set right, so I pulled the flywheel and grabbed the center magnet ring and was able to twist it a little with my hand. The glue was also very brittle and came right off with my fingernail. I went to a local mechanic and he too said he had never heard of a center magnet rotating around the hub. He only had a flywheel from a 90 model so we compared the two. They were a little different but matched up enough to try. I came home and put it on and was able to get it to run right again. Still not sure if this flywheel is correct or not, because I have not indexed it, but is showing 8 BTDC with an idle speed of 1100 on the hose. I can lower all the way to 800RPM with a 4 BTDC showing. I assume this is the difference in the timing pointer which was set to the other flywheel. I pushed the timer base all the way against the Max advance stop and it read 28 BTDC. I will verify the timing pointer lining up with TDC and set my advance to 19BTDC as per the sticker attached to motor. Motor is cranking right away and staying running very smoothly. No popping or sneezing and is very quiet. Can't wait to take it out and fine tune it on the water.

Re: No Idle Caused By Loose Center Magnet

Its not common but not unheard of for the center magnet to become loose. Service reps and some dealers have a "map" of where to reglue them.
