Alot of you may remember me as "Lundman'. I no longer use that moniker here.
I have reregistered under a new username "SeaNymph Man". I own a 1973 Sea Nymph 14R 'Big Water' boat that has a 1970 9.5 Johnson for power.
That motor will soon be traded for a 15 HP Johnson motor made anywhere from 1975 to 1990 whenever I find the motor I want. I will need a short shaft
motor w/ manual auto rewind rope start. I have started a "motor fund" for
this little project. The boat is rated for 25 HP,but I feel that may be a bit too much power for a 14 ft. rig. Nothing wrong with Evinrude at all,...I am just
partial to Johnsons. I want to upgrade because I feel the 9.5 may be a bit too small and doggish on accelaration if I get myself and two other people in the boat at the same time.

Re: No longer "Lundman",...now "SeaNymph Man"

My 14R now lives upside down on blocks in the backyard. She was replaced with a 2009 Starcraft SF14. When my son's pond is completed the old girl will be moved over there for a second career.

We got the 14R in 1986 and ran with a 9.5 for many years. Both boys grew up in the boat and we ran with 2 adults and 2 teenagers in some pretty big water. It DID plane and we always got where we needed to go, but it wasn't a speed demon either....LOL.

I upgraded to a 1972 18HP Evinrude a few years ago and that was an ideal HP. In 2007 I upgraded again to a new Yami 2 stroke 25, and that was definately too big for the boat. I had to run a hydrofoil to get reasonable performance.

So, IMHO, a 1970's vintage 18 is the optimum motor for that rig. It has more displacement than the 15's (which use the same block as the 9.9's), but its really not that much heavier.

I run a Sea-Nymph, good little boat, she is 30 years old and is still dry.

I have a 16' bass style boat that I gutted and rebuilt 2 years ago, unless someone hits me or I hit something in the water I see her lasting many more years.
