OK, i have HAD it with trying to fix this 1980 merc 90 IL6. After all the parts i put on it, it still comes down to me ripping apart the powerhead cause all cyls are 125psi except for #3, which is 45. I put the motor on ebay hoping to make SOME of my money back.

I am going to pick up a newer (1990 - 1997 i hope) boat withg a I/O. Any suggestions on what type of motor/outdrive is a good reliable one? Any that you wouldnt reccomend?

My budget is probably going to be $5000 - $8000, any suggestions on nice looking boats for that range?

Thanks!

i am a happy 10 year outdrive user who has had many outboards before that i just did not want to buy a big enough outboard for a boat in the 20 ft range

depending on what you get when there used its just a different way to spend money ;)

you really only get two picks merc or volvo, merc is by far the most common

that doesent make them the best it just means brunswick owned more boat builders

OMC is there but good service is really hit and miss

i think the Alpha GEN II drive which starts around 1991 is the best pick if you go with a merc drive boat

a fresh water boat or one that has been trailered is the best bet IMHP

i would avoide boats that had been docked in saltwater

tommays

go for a boat with a 4-stroke on it.
you won't be sorry.
i have owned a merc, a johnson and an evinrude
and none of them could compare to my
50hp honda that i'm now running.
fuel efficiency alone alost doubles !

happy hunting !
