no neutral hard to start engine

I have a 1955 or 56 Mercury Hurricane Model 28. It is a 18 horsepower engine. the motor has no neutral it just quit working i dunno what happened. The motor needed a impeller so my dad put one in it. He doesn't know what happened either. can you please help me or get me in the right direction. ty great fishing guys out there.

Hi, Henry.<br /><br />The right direction is to get a service manual for your engine. <br /><br />It will explain and show how the shifting mechanism works. Then you can discover what went wrong and fix it.<br /><br />Good luck.
