No Numbers Stamped On Gearcase Gears

I need to replace some parts in the gearcase of my 1964 18HP Evinrude Model 18403D but the gears in my gearcase have no numbers stamped on them and none of the major suppliers show my specific model.

The only number I could find was on the propeller shaft which has the part number of 305192.

I've checked and double-checked but I don't see any numbers on the gears. Is there another internet source that might show a breakdown of my outboard's parts. MarineEngine and Boats . net don't show my model.

Reverse gear 307485
Forward gear 378079
Pinion 308617
Clutch Dog 305191

Just use the Johnson 18hp, same thing as far as you are concerned.

Look at the parts list for a Johnson FD-18. It is the exact same motor as the Evinrude except for the paint.

Re: No Numbers Stamped On Gearcase Gears

I've been trying to use the 1964 Johnson Model FD-18 (which is available at MarineEngine etc) however, less than half of the Johnson parts match up with my '64 Evinrude. For example, the Water Pump Impeller Housing numbers don't match nor do other parts match up i.e. Motor Mount Brackets, Shift Handle, etc.

I will go with the majority vote here and use the Johnson specs for the gearcase parts but it still seems weird that so many parts don't crossover between the Evinrude 18403 and the Johnson FD series.

Most of it should match, save for cosmetics. Are you sure you are not checking original numbers and superseeded numbers? Just a thought?

For example the impeller housing is 303070 superseeded to 313543, but very much the same part.

Great feedback ... thanks to all.

You're right about the 'superseded' effect. Some of the retail marine-part-sites show when a part number has changed, or been 'superseded', with a new number. But not always, especially with the older outboards.

Is there a cross-reference (or supersede) source out there in cyberspace similar to those for boat props, spark plugs, etc?

Marineengine.com is usually pretty good at it. Type in the part number in the search box and it will bring up the superseeded number.
