My recent question was missworded. Sorry, the tone my 1992 johnson 40 hp j40tletf outboard gave was rapid, signaling NO OIL,not low oil.I did check the screen in the oil resivoir an it looks very clean. I narrowed it down to a purple wire going to a black plastic device next to the carborator. (I dont want to appear totally ignorant but is this the oil pump or something else? )If this is the problem I will change it myself if my dealer can get one for me.About what price will I be looking at for this little unit aproximately? You guys were very helpful before and it's very appreciated. THANKS ifish24752

IFish..... The VRO (fuel/oil pump) assy is a rather large black plastic item. The top hose of which leads to the carburetor. The usual price is in the neighborhood of $300 (WOW!)

Before going that route, do this as there's a possibility that air had entered the oil line. Run the engine. When the no oil warning engages (a beep every other second), pump the oil primer bulb. The horn should cease. If the VRO is indeed faulty (and no oil restriction exists), the horn alarm will engage again within a short time.

ifish24752

Remember to premix all your fuel 1:50 from now on till you are sure your system works, or your motor will be history. If you system didnt work you should have problems already, chances are fault in alarm system only. Do NOT start at all without premix in tank !!

You're probably refering to the alarm module - it's on the back of the VRO unit. Some good advice in the previous 2 posts, however a new unit is more like $250, not $300 (unless you have a dealer install it). If the unit is faulty, whether you replace the unit yourself, or have a dealer do it - run a tank or two of premix until you verify oil consumption. I usually use a piece of tape or a magic marker to mark the oil level on the reservoir. Once the oil level has dropped, you can return to straight-fuel.

-John

BTW - Your motor is a '93, if it was a '92 the model number would be J40TLENF, ET = 93.
