What services can i preform on a 1978 70hp 3cyl. Johnson after setting out for 10+ years. any help will do.<br /><br />------------<br />douglas

Starting at the bottom, change the lower unit fluid.<br /><br />Change the plugs, clean out and purge all fuel lines. Clean the carbs.<br /><br />Put about a teaspoon full of straight 2 stroke oil in each cylinder (leave plugs out) and turn over motor a few times. This will lube the rings.<br /><br />Use 50:1 quality 2 stroke oil and gas mix (1 pint to 6 gallons) and attempt to start using water muffs.<br /><br />If it starts okay then change the impellar in the lower unit. It may have dried out due to age.<br /><br />Bob

thanks bob. after some transom work i took the boat out an it ran perfect twice, the 3rd time it ran like a 9hp i changed the plugs and all the dry rotted gas lines. this is my 1st in 30 yrs an id like to get some service out of if. considering the things ive already done do i still need to do these thing.<br /><br />-----------------<br />douglas

You really need to check your lower unit fluids and change the impellar (water pump), impellars dry rot. Your last post says it ran like a 9hp??<br />Hope you get years of enjoyment out of it.

if your lines were falling apart, they were most likely falling apart from the inside too. id take apart the carbs and clean em and get the varnish out of the old fuel tank.
