No power in water throttle engaged!

Hi,<br /><br />I have a 5.8 OMC Cobra. Its all original and up to now, problem free. When out of the water with "muffs" on, the engine accelerates normal when the throttle is engaged and disengaged. But when in the water I have very little power when the throttle is engaged and normal acceleration when disengaged.<br />The intakes are clear, the water pump is functioning. There is no overheating and everything seems fine until its in the water. (maybe I'll put wheels on it).<br /> Because it operates normally out of the water. I am stumped.<br />Any help is appreciated.

Check throtttle cable adjustment, it may be binding at the throttle body and only giving you half throttle in the water. My OMC 5.0 was kinda doing the same thing.

Sounds like you may have a timing issue or a tune up problem. Points? or electronic ignition?

i had the same problem last year. but it was an aq125 270 on a 22' boat. at the slip it would run and tach out normal. as soon as i got into the bay and accelerated, no power.. my brother-in-law who is a car mechanic tinkered with what blk-n-blu said and every thing was fine. i know he timed it and something about my motor being tired since it was an 84'. so he advanced the timing a hair as well.. good ever since...when was the last tune up?

Madcat, are we talking about Fuel injection, or Carbeurator?

I will definately try the timing. It is carb driven, I have new plugs cap and rotor.<br />Thanks Much
