When I tested the orange wire at the relay while cranking over I had little over 8 volts

Once the carb is filled it should keep running even without the pump running, so we have 2 possible problems.

All of the early GL's used Yel/Red from the key to energize the start assit relay and the FP relay thru a diode. Once running power comes from the Alternator Green wire thru another diode to keep FP relay ON

Power to coil and ALT comes from the Key switch purple wire

To check a diode, use a miltimeter and set it on the diode scale (will have a diode symbol). Place leads on each side of the diode and one way the meter will show a high resistance. When lead are swapped the meter will show low resistance or next to zero

So with key turned ON there should be 12V at the ALT and coil and alarm will sound. Might disconnect alarm until problems are found

The diodes are close to the relay and inside the harness in most cases. There small and can be over looked
