No Power to motor

Good morning all,

Thank you for all of your advice and help

I have a Manta Ray 18' bow rider with a mercruiser 3.0 and an alpha one out drive

I recently rebuilt the carb and everything seems to be working great on the motor until the past Sunday when we were coming back to the dock I started to power down once we got about 20 yard out and the motor just shut off and wouldn't start back up. I though maybe it was battery so I flagged another boat down and asked them for a jump, once we put the cables on I turned the key and still nothing. My blowers, radio, trim, and bilge are all working.

fast forward to Monday afternoon I got home and went out to the boat and looked to see if I had power to the motor and I do, there is power at the starter and both sides of the 50 amp fuse on top of the motor. I have no power at the dash though I have checked the safety lanyard and it is on and in the correct position.

Any advise would be helpful

thanks
Chris

Start going through terminals to check for corrosion and that everything is connected. The sudden loss of power suggests that a connection somewhere has come loose.

thank you for the quick response.

isn't it a solid connection from the harness in the back to the front?
also I did pull apart the harness in the back yesterday and I noticed that on the motor side of the harness there are numbers does anyone by chanve know which number is the power to the ignitions switch so I can make sure there is power getting to the harness?

Thanks you

There is usually an inline fuse somewhere under your dash for the ignition wire.

UPDATE:::
So I'm thinking its my slave solenoid I have power on one side but nothing from the other side...
also I hooked up my jump starter to the starter and all the starter does is just spin now of course my ignition switch is not on cause I have not yet replaced the slave solenoid, is this my issue on why the motor will not turn over or do I have other issues?

Thanks
Chris

When you say one side of the solenoid, are you talking of the large or small terminals. If small, then I would agree that it is the solenoid. If large terminals, that is normal if it is not energized.

The red/purple wire on the big bolt is hot and the other side is not... And further the small bolts are not hot either

the red/purple is always hot, the large yellow/red stripe wire goes to the starter solenoid. jumping the 2 large lugs makes the motor spin not just the starter.
If just the starter spins and nothing else you have a bad bendix drive or starter solenoid.
The 2 small terminals are ground and a yellow/red stripe that comes from the ign switch. that wire only gets 12v in the "start" position

The red/purple wire goes from your engine compartment through the main connector then up to your ignition switch. Take your volt meter and see if you have power to the "B" connection on your switch. If not, you are losing power somewhere in between. Usually it is either a fuse or a bad connection at the main engine harness connector.

Thank you for the reply
I have taken apart the harness and put it back together for a sure connection, and I still have no power at the key switch. I will attemp to work more on it when I get home this afternoon and post what I find out... Do you have any other suggestions?

The good news is there are very few possible explanations. You will have to start tracking it down. See the pic below - if you do not have power at the "B" position of your switch, then you have a break somewhere. As the pic below shows, you have a fuse inline somewhere. You will need to track it down.

You have already had the connector taken off - one thing you can do is get a length of wire and use your ohm meter to see if you have continuity for the entire length of the wire.

Tracking down wiring issues is no fun... but it is imperative to have a few basic tools to do so. These two tools are pretty much essential:

Fixed the issue... It was the inline fuse under the dash that was blown... Replaced it with a 30a (causes that's what was in there) and motor turned over and started like nothing was ever wrong
