Hi all,

Looking for some guidance on a friend's boat I am helping out with:

2003 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi-C

Early last year had a fuel pump failure, replaced the fuel pump and all was good most of the season.

At the end of last season he ran in from a storm, the boat ran well. Later that evening he went out for a cruise and could not yet on plane.

Power Loss/ no power at WOT will not plane

WOT starts to get up but will not get high enough RPM for planing out just sucking air.

Compression 148-160 on all cylinders

Since they were older and maintenance items we replaced: Plugs, cap, rotor wires. I also took a look at the fuel filter and looked ok.

Fuel pressure ~55, low pressure ~15 at idle (I did not check yet at WOT under load, but will if we launch this again in the next couple days)

No engine codes

I pulled the fuel pressure regulator and had a few particles in it, I cleaned it out but didn't make a difference.

I saw the service bulletin from VP saying to remove the filter and place an e-clip, I will try to get a clip from the local dealer. I do not feel this is my issue but I guess its possible.

I do not have a scanner to get sensor readings. Any recommendations on a DIY tool?

~650 hours on the engine

While out previously I disconnected the oil pressure sensor and then the coolant temp sensor and exhaust sensors and no change in performance. No knocking, pinging, rattling, just the sound of a wide-open throttle sucking massive amounts of air and giving no power in return.

Runs great with no load/on the trailer on muffs.

I pulled the plugs tonight.

Plugs 1,3,5,7 are very very clean (too clean but only about 20 mins of run time)

Plugs 2,4 heavy carbon, 6 less carbon, 8 very clean

Any ideas on what to go after next? Could weak spark by a failing coil cause odd cylinder firing like this under load?

Thanks much, any advice is appreciated.

Are the 2 plugs with carbon the same ones with lower compression?

May be time to clean and flow test injectors.
Could swap the 2 injectors and see if the soot follows. Either that or the cylinders are leaking oil, but it doesn't look like oil burn does it?

I see you did the plugs. Did you gap em? I have an issue with bad gaps and it behaved like yours

The boat does not burn oil, I will verify the plug gaps and I decided to buy new injectors.. they will be going in tomorrow and I will provide an update.

thank you all for the suggestions thus far!

Injectors finally came in and I put them in this evening.. boat is running great! Does smell a bit rich when idling but I may be super sensitive given all I have been through!
The boat is a 2003 four winns h210 and we just hit 45 with two of us in it..
thanks all for the help.
