I pulled the boat today to replace the shift cable, after fighting with that for several hours, I still have no reverse. the cable shifts ok, I pulled the port outdrive off & installed it on the starboard side & it shifts correctly, so the problem is evidently in the outdrive, now what? any ideas? I plan on breaking the case in 2 in the morning, any advise would be helpful.<br />here is what has been seen so far, the shift lever needs to be as far to the left(looking down on it) as possible for reverse to engage. the shift cable does not have enough through to do this.it looks like it needs to be between 9 & 10 o'clock position. I plan on splitting the case today to see if I see anything obviously wrong. I am a mechanic & hope I can make this repair myself cause I have taken a real beating this season on this boat, I can not afford to bring it to a marine shop. any help would be appreciated.

You need to have a sterndrive mech.look at the problem. There are many things that can cause this.If water got in there is going to be bearing/gear issues to deal with.Without the right tools to set them up you're asking for trouble.you may be looking for a new/reman.drive. :(
