No Reverse 200hp Johnson Ocean Pro 2001

Just trying to feel out if this is just an adjustment or the clutch dog or gear might be bad. I took it out and would get a lot of chatter going into reverse but would go into gear and hold there. 2nd time out I get a lot of chatter going into reverse, but it will not go into gear. It does throttle up also as if it is in gear.

Going into forward happens flawlessly.

Remove lower unit and set the shift rod height.

Make sure the shift rod moves up and down easily. The shift rods can bind in the shift pocket cover.

**** rod moves fine and I did experience the binding you are taking about back when I had the lower unit off to get some other things done. I never did ask the mechanic to check the shift rod length though. Since I hadn't had a chance to run the boat I figured it was was set correctly. I just bought it in July and was doing a lot of other things on it.
