I just installed a new lower shift cable on my '89 bravo II. After re-installing outdrive I can get forward and neutral but no reverse with or without engine running. I was able to get into reverse prior with some effort, but the shift cable was very stiff and needed replacing. While re-installing outdrive and trying to line up the shifter cable in the shift bracket I did engage forward, but I shifted back into neutral once I slide the outdrive onto the housing. I'm assuming I have the shift cable lined up inproperly in the shift bracket, but I can shift neutral to forward and back, which is odd. Anyone had this problem? Is there a trick when re-installing that I missed?

Did you use the mercruiser special tool to adjust the shift cable? If not you can cause problems real quick if you run it. Another thing to check would be if you got the shift cable hooked in properly on the sterndrive end. You can just pull the drive back off the bell housing about an inch and make sure the cable end is in the correct spot.
Good luck,
Justin@sterndrive.cc
www.sterndrive.cc

I seemed to figure out the problem, as the cable end was not shift bracket in the stern drive. Regading the special tool, I did not use as I didn't have one. What exactly does that tool do? Everything seems to work now, shifts into all gears while running.

The tool gets the shift adjustment perfect. Basically they want an exact dimension on the shift cable length and the tool slips over the mounting points of the cable to make sure it is right.
Justin@sterndrive.cc
www.sterndrive.cc
