no reverse on 1969 seahorse

I have a 1969 seahorse when I bought it the shift handle was broken so I bought a new one an change it to do this I had to grind the old stainless bolt
after I replace the handle now my reverse doesn't want to go in any more any ideas why his could be.Thanks

Is a 20HP.I don't have the serial.I try to get to the problem yesterday so I taken it to my buddy's place.any idea where I can get a diagram of this motor?an what is adog clutch and where is located?Thanks
