new boat owner here... ive been wrenching on a 1978 Mercury 70 hp 3 cyl for a few days. ive searched and there is a bunch of "no reverse" threads, but none like this. and a HAVN'T removed the lower unit, btw.
i dont have reverse. forward engages fine. the control lever wont go into reverse with the cable connected. if i remove the drive cable i can (a) move the gear selector arm into reverse manually and (b) move the MerControl lever back into reverse. hook it back up and no reverse again?!?!
is this the cable? i dont see how a cable can fail. it looks in good repair. i didnt look unde the MerControl.
also, i dont know if this can have something to do with the lockout, but i tool the tilt pin out because it was bent and when we were trying to engage reverse, the motor was just hanging off the back in the tank.
this is a dumb question. where is the mixture screw? is there one, or one for each carb. i see where to adjust the idle. im still kinda stumped on the 2 carbs for 3 cylinders
thanks
Bob
