no reverse with alpha 1

hello,<br /><br />took my 89 maxum out for the first time this year, and much to my dismay, upon startup, in neutral at idle, the prop is pushing me forward. when i tried to go into reverse, the motor would just shut off. i have mercruiser 3.0 l, with alpha 1 outdrive. i have no clue where to even start. any help is certainly appreciated.

Common problem. Time for a new lower shift cable. Its sticking and making the shift interrupt switch kill the engine.
