No Reverse

My 1989 Johnson 225 has no reverse. It worked fine until last weekend, now nothing. I tried adjusting the shift cable but that had no effect. When I disconnected the shift cable and push the mechanism as far back as it will go it seems like the reverse gears try to engage but not fully. Forward gear still works fine. Any ideas? I would not think that clutch dogs would wear out all of sudden like that. I plan to drain the lower unit oil this week and see wehat I find.

Update- I drained the lower unit oil, looked fine. I have partially dissassembled the unit so far reverse gear looks fine. clutch dogs show some minor wear. I need a special tool to further dissasseble the unit, so I've stopped for now. My book says to use a special socket to hold the drive shaft while loosening the pinion nut.
