No self-test beep when low oil sensor disconnected

Hi,
I've got a Mariner 40, 2-stroke, 2-cyl, 1994. The previous owner disconnected the low oil sensor (probably due to magnet coming loose). I get no self test beep when turning key ON. I reconnected the oil sensor and the alarm went off, so the buzzer is working.

Does disconnecting the low oil sensor take out the self-test beep as well? I so, and the sensor is ok, can I remove the oil sensor from the tank and have it reconnected "outside" to get the self test working?

Thanks.

Disconnecting the sensor should not stop start up the beep. Disconnecting the module will stop the startup beep.
There are two parts to the system. One is the switch in the tank(the sensor). The other is the cube which the sensor attaches to. It's called the low oil warning module.

I don't know about the 40hp, but the 115's were built with and without the warning module. Mine doesn't have the module and therefore doesn't have a self test beep.

On my design (no module) when either the temp sensor or the low oil sensor close they complete the circuit to ground and the buzzer sounds. Simple as that, nothing to beep at startup.

You may want to check to see if you really do have the module.

When you connect the low oil sensor your getting the alarm not the test. Your module may not have a test beep, some did and some didn't. The only way to know for sure is to call Merc and ask.

Yes, I'm getting the oil alarm (so no/unhearable self-test). According to manual it should have a self-test beep-beep.

I guess I can try removing the sensor from the tank and reconnect it and see if that gives me no oil alarm but self-test, even if it should have no effect.

Thanks for helping out.

I would still recommend that you check to see that you actually have a module.

My manual also says that I should have a test beep, but I don't and never will.

Ok, will do. Btw, is this module not the same as the TPM box (Timing and Protection Module)?
