just did outdrive reseal, bellows, and shift cable
not sure if this is an issue with my outdrive or what, with the outdrive off the boat, i can shift through forward and reverse by turning the shifter by hand and seeing the prop shaft change direction. bolted it onto the boat tonight and i have about 1/3 the movement out of the shift cable that i need to complete full shifting
i know with my outdrive sometimes when its off i cant get it into gear untill i turn the motor a little, wondering if this is the same kinda deal

If you drop the shift lever into gear, you should be able to rotate the prop backward from whichever gear it is in and lock the gears in. The cables, if all is assembled and working right, should not be under pressure then.

If the lower shift cable is bad then it will hang everything up and may prevent full movement. The prop won't lock in either without extra effort.. Depending on which model drive you have there may be variations, so you might post the particulars.

You should be able to pull the lower shift cable linkage off at the top end and manually push pull the plastic end piece, called the guide, in and out of gear. Doing that simplifies the number of components you are checking. Shove it in, climb out and rotate the prop in reverse and it should lock up. Pull it out all the way, rotate prop forward(clockwise from rear) and it should again lock up. You should be able to feel any and all resistance to cable movement - a new cable will have rough spots but still be fairly easy to slide in and out.

i pulled the outdrive back off, and its definitely not a shift cable issue, it works perfect with the drive off. also i have forward and reverse on the outdrive with it off. im wondering if when the shift lever raised up on the lower if it jumped some teeth and thats what the issue is. as it stands right now, when the shift lever is straight ahead, which would be "forward" the lower end appears to be in neutral. if i move it slightly farther away from centered it locks the prop clockwise and ratchets counter clockwise... which if im correct means its in reverse? when i have it at its max position in the other direction it locks the prop counterclockwise and ratchets clockwise. which i thought was forward

Did you split the upper and lower during your repairs? Like you said - misaligning the shift shaft would certainly do that.

Turn the shift shaft on the outdrive all the way clockwise. Is it pointing straight ahead, and does the prop lock when you turn it counterclockwise. If so it is OK.
