Alright so I found a 64' evinrude big twin that is good all around except for one sure important thing no spark... I want to know if this can be easy to fix and if it is worth buying or if I should forget about it. It has been in storage for the past ten years so it might have less hours than one may think. The guy said that their is no magneito so he tried hot wiring it but that didn't work any ideas? I may go have a look at it tommorw.

Thanks for any suggestions Fuzzey

Those motors are magneto ignition. It is identical to a lawnmower, except being a two cylinder, it had two sets of points, condensers and coils. You can clean and gap the points thru an inspection hole, but to change any of the components, you will need to pull the flywheel. Replacement of the entire ignition system should be under $100. Make sure te flywheel is present. make sure the magnets on the flywheel are good.

By dinking around with trying to hot wire it, he may have destroyed the coils. Nothing like knowing what you are doing before you act.

Alright im gonna go see it tommorow then 100$ should be good. The starter works so im going to do a compression test and make sure all three gears are their. How would I test the strength of the magnets(makesure their good)?

Thanks a ton Fuzzey

Stick a screwdriver up there. It should be strongly attracted by the magnets. They're magnets. If they hold the screwdriver like a good magnet, you're golden. There's no real test other than subjective.

Of course the flywheel must be off to do this.

Since the seller has mucked about with this engine, count on replacing the two magneto coils. Points and condensers, too. Plug wires, of course.

You MUST have a service manual before proceeding with repairs. Even one of the aftermarket manuals will do. The seller obviously did not have one while engages in his incompetent fiddling. What else might he have done?

I'd think long and hard about this purchase. Surely there are other outboards you can look at. Why buy trouble?

The magnets are good. They don't go bad anymore, at least not since WWII.

Read haulyard's thread on his Lark IV for some other suggestions.

OK I think I have been convinced to look else where...

I have found a 1961 Johnson seahorse. It is from the origional owner for $50 im gonna go try to start it up when our scheduals align. He had raced it on a 12' hydroplane would this be better or worse (the racing) is it like highway miles vs city miles? Anything wrong with this year of Johnson?

Thanks Fuzzey
