Engine won't fire, no spark. Started troubleshooting at the coil.
Put mulitimeter ohm tester on each of the sparkplug wires (2) and needle doesn't move.
Can I assume the coil / cdi is bad from this test or is there something else to check before spending money?
Any and all opinions appreciated.

Re: No spark 1987 Suzuki DT 30

my thoughts are to test with proper test equipment the voltage from charge and pulser coils that feed into CDI and then the voltage outputs of CDI.
If input is not in spec then you cannot get good out put

Service manual is something good to have for steps and the specs

thanks for your response. I do have a service manual (2) and the first troubleshooting recommendation is to test the resistance across the secondary coil / cdi. From the manual:

[I]To check secondary coil resistance of
CDI unit, detach spark plug wires at
spark plugs. Connect a tester lead to terminal
end of each spark plug wire.
Secondary coil resistance sbould be
2136-3204 ohms at 20?C (68?F).

I have no reading across the secondary coil / cdi?
The manual says to check the resistance across the charge and pulsar coils but it doesn't say anything about checking voltage. I'm going to test the charge and pulsar coils and see what they are?

If I have no resistance across the coil can I get any voltage out?
thanks again.

Update:
Undid the wiring to check pulser and ignition coils.
Checked the pulser and ignition coils with an ohm meter according to the manual.
Both were within spec (both on the high side of spec?).
Put wiring back together.
Figured that since I had no spark it would be a good time to do a compression test.
Just for good measure I attached the spark tester to the coil and to the plug to verify no spark.
Hooked up the battery and turned the key.
You guessed it.
Orange spark. Is it supposed to be blue?
Tested other plug, same thing.
Removed spark tester and attached wires to plugs.
Turned key and it started right up.
Confused but not defeated.
Any help in this struggle is appreciated.

maybe a bad connection you fixed by undoing and then putting back together

Maybe?
Maybe just cleaning up the ground helped.
But my luck would have to change drastically for that to be.
As mentioned above the spark I detected in the tester was orange not blue.
Does that matter? Is that a sign that something is weak?
Thanks again for your response.
