posted September 11, 2002 10:41 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 1975 Chrysler 75 hp model # 757HB that has become rather finicky as of late. When this motor runs it runs very strong & doesn't miss a beat. However, lately it only wants to start when it feels like it. At this time I am getting no spark to the plugs, I have a Clymer book that is pretty good @ trouble shooting but I'm afraid it is kind of weak on my specific model. Mine has the Magnapower ignition. Would this also have points under the flywheel that could be adjusted &/or replaced? There is no mention of this in the manual. I am going to try jumping a wire to the blue terminal from my (+) battery post as suggested in the manual. Any expertise in this area would be greatly appreciated. This motor is on a 1975 Chrysler Funster boat & I would hate to split them up as I have had this boat for 14 years & it still looks 90% original.
Thanks for any help!
Steve

Re: No spark in my Chrysler

If you have checked the obvious...plug wires, distributor cap, distributor belt and the general condition of all wiring, you should only have 3 items left...power pack, coil, and preamp. Coil is easy to test...cd unit and preamp you would have to check the book on, but I would narrow it down to these three things...I know this is kinda vague but hopefully your book should help. Also I do have some used ignition parts for this model if you need something...just a Thought

Thought,
Thanks for the input, do you know if this motor has points under the flywheel? It has the distributor ignition, I am at a loss. I'm sure you know how frustrating boat problems can be. I have had this boat & motor for 14 years & it has
always been properly winterized (here in the Dakotas) I will endeavor to perceivere!
Thanks!

Re: No spark in my Chrysler

No points under flywheel...maybe in distributor, but you said there was a blue wire to dist and that would indicat to me an electronic sensor in there. Those are great motors...I ran one hard for over 20 years and still running...in someone elses barn.
I'll try to help...if you havn't checked the rotor or the dist cap do this first...I think you can remove the cap without removing dist and look closely for problems in the cap or rotor...take them to a mechanic if necessary...this is most likely where the problem lies...The big black wire to the coil should be checked along with the plug wires, these will seldom die but will not hurt to replace them with new marine type units.
The coils can fail but I have never seen one of these go bad...have it tested. That only leaves the cd unit and the preamp in the distributor...Check out the cap, rotor, and coil and if all is ok I will do some research on how to test the rest...been a long time...just some Thoughts

Re: No spark in my Chrysler

I recently revived a "seventy-something" 70HP Chrysler for a friend. All that was required to get the spark going again was inserting a tiny piece of 400 grit sandpaper into the points gap and pulling it through a few times. Once the contacts made good electrical contact the motor started right up. If you are lucky, you might get a similar shade-tree trick to get you going.
