I have a 1989 Johnson GT 150, I got it back form a mechanic having the lower unit housing replaced. I discovered the key had been left on when I got it home. After charging the battery it turns over fine with about 4 to 500 rpms when cranking but there is no spark on any of the cylinders. I disconnected the big red plug as someone had suggested and turned it over by jumping the solenoid, but still no spark. Any suggestions?

Cdi electronics has a good troubleshooting online section. Easier for you to go there than i to type it out.

I'm having the same problem with my 89 150hp. Tried figuring things out all day today, but no progress. Followed the manual, but couldn't get a consistent spark on all cylinders. Changed plugs and such...beginning to look at the power pack.

Disconnecting the red plug at the engine and jump-starting is a valid test. If you get no spark with this test, you have confirmed that the problem is on the engine itself. You will want to verify that the stator power pack and timer base are outputting the correct voltages when the engine is cranking. cdielectronics.com

I apologize for hijacking, I'm new to the site and also wanted to state that the power pack may be bad from my experience. Hopefully y'all got things figured out.

Thanks for the responses, I got the trouble shooting guide has some great info. I need to get some help to check the out puts while the engine is cranking. Does anyone know if leaving the key on will burn up something in the power pack? I think I will replace it anyway since the boat is 27 years old. Again thanks for the input.

I've left the key on before-over a week. When I get back, the battery was stone dead. Replace it and everything is back to normal-no other issues.
