Engine stopped several times while going fishing, was restarted and ran at idle but when put in gear stopped. Finally won't start. After being towed in, checked spark and no spark on any of the cylinders. Approx 600 hours on engine. Engine will turn over but will not start. Plan to try to get a manual today. Read the previous posts on no spark and they indicate first step is to check the kill wire. Can I do that at the switch or ?? What would be the next step? Thks for the help

Pull spark plug wire so engine will not start, install a spark checker, disconnect deutsch connector with blk/yel and jump solenoid to test for spark. If spark returns you have a ignition switch, kill switch or connector problem as I have seen the connector short internally. If still no spark download CDI troubling testing and test timer base.

The rectrifier has nothing to do with lack of spark. It is for charging the battery only. Get back to trouble shooting the ignition with your DVA meter and CDI trouble shooting guide. Could have bad pack, stator or timer base.

I would think there is a troubleshooting procedure for that ign system on the CDIElectonics web site. A factory service manual also has it. Basically, the stator provides voltage to the powerpack, the powerpack fires the coils, when the optical sensor tells it to. When cranking the motor, battery voltage is supplied to the powerpack as well.

There is no optical sensor on that mtr. It has a timer base. Normally when you have no output on one side of the stator you'll have no spark on three cyl's. You may also have a bad power pack.

Just bought a 1989 Lund alaskan with a 89 Johnson 30 hp , the guy told me when you start it and on idle starts the sputter. First time I started it and turned the throttle and then brought it back down to idle it stalled. After that started it again fired right up and sputter a little bit then stopped then would do it again. I was told it might be the rich to lean controls might need to be adjusted, or carb needs to be cleaned.
