Hello, I am posting from Viña del Mar, Chile.

I am trying to repair a 1976 115 HP Evinrude. I am new at this, but seems it needs a power pack change since there is no way I can get spark at any cylinder.

I disconnected the red wire harness and jumped the starter solenoid, and no spark either.

I checked the stator (brown cables) with Ohnm meter, it reads no resistance, which I imagine is OK.

I also checked, with the Ohm meter, the sensor windings and also show no resistance.

But when I put the Ohm meter (on a dead engine) between the spark plug cables and earth, I shows isolation on cylinders number 4 and number 3, but it shows no resistance (the needle jumps on the Ohnm meter)on cylinders number 2 and 1. Could this prove that the power pack is the foulty piece?

Thank you guys in advance, Andrés

Hello
the pack cannot be tested with an ohmmeter.
the brown to brown yellow wires from the stator or brown on some older engines should have resistance. without my manual here I cant give a specific but something less that 25 ohms or so I think. remember the stator is only a coil of wire. when you say no resistance I am assuming you found 0 to 2 ohms and not an open circuit.
Good luck and keep posting

Thank you Rodbolt, what I meant by no resistance is that I did not find an open circuit on the windings, but yopu are right, it should have certain resistance since it is a coil, I did not measure it exactly, I just saw that the needle jumped, confirming that it was a closed circuit.

I will read what Seahorse is suggesting me, and I will come back to you guys, after I learn a bit more.

What I really do not understand is why I found open circuit between spark plug cable connection and ground on cylinders number 2 and 4, and I did found close circuit on cylinders 3 and 1. All this on a dead engine. As little as I know about this ignition, I realize that all cylinders should behaving the same on dead angine, but here I have different reading realizing the same procedure for each spark plug wire. May it be an indication that two of the ignition coils are defective?

Andrés
