Hello to all I am a new user so please bear with me as I find my way arounfd this BB. I have a 1973 Johnson 50hp motor. Model#50esl73a Serial#c27708. It turns over great but no spark at the plugs. There is a honey coloured substance dripping from the Stator, it is a hardened substance.I think but am not sure it might be both the PP and the Stator. I am no expert mechanic by any means. I have a couple of questions in regard to this:
1: what year PP's and Stator's are interchangible with my '73
2: is there a test I can do that will definately tell me if it is either the Stator or the PP? I have tried disconnecting the Black with yellow stripe wire from the PP and starting but still no go. Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated!! This is a great BB!! I have been lurking for over a month and descided it was time to join!!

BiggerD

About the only thing I can tell you at this point is that you will need a manual, and start at square one. You will also need a flywheel puller to get a look at that stator. Let us know what you have to work with, and we can probably help you out.

Yeah, that dripping from the stator is definetly suspect. Process of elimination prevails on this one..

i have that same motor, mine is a 72, and i have another, a 1980... and i have a manual..so if you need any technichal qeustions before your manual arrives, phatmanmike@yahoo.com ... but onto your prob...do you have spark ant 1 plug or no plugs... check the kill switch(simple things first...wire yourself a small push button starter switch and disconnetct the entire wire harness for all your testing... i had same problem with my 1980 50hp and had same brown goo and it was tha stator... but GET A MANUAL!!! OEM IF POSSIBLE, if not seloc or clymer will work... i personally think seloc has better pics and descriptions...just my 2 cents... keep posting and let us know...

one more thing.. now that youve "joined" theres no turning back... read this post... thanks and youll understand. :p

Re: No Spark on my Johnson 50hp

Phatmanmike, I have no spark at either plug. Fuse is good, did current check on PP, checked all wiring for cracking etc....From reading this forum, it seems alot of the no spark problem occur from PP or Stator or both being shot. I will check further into these spots whemn Manual arrives. I will if needed take you up on the tech info via email.

Thanks...BiggerD

Ya' really need to get that flywheel popped and get a good look at the stator. Most likely when the stator melted down, it took the charge coil with it. It's all one assembly.
