87 yamaha 150

boat sat in the water for 7 weeks
battery ran down, would not charge up, so i replaced it.

still will not start... come to find there is no spark.

given the above circumstances of sitting all summer, where would be a good place to look for the electrical failure causing the no spark condition. thanks

Re: no spark

tough question ?

rephrase... what usually goes bad on these things that should be checked when there is no spark. lots of things to check... what is a likely suspect.

Re: no spark

tbird,

There are many threads on this so you can find more info by searching.
If there is no spark on all cylinders I would first check the charge coil output

Re: no spark

a quick test is to remove the CDI cover and remove the white wire from the CDI. if it sparks now test the harness, keyswitch and emergency stop switch for shorts to ground. if no spark with white wire removed its time to test the charge coils. not to be confused with the lighting coils

Re: no spark

I have the same problem with my 115.Did what rodbolt said to do . I disconnected the wiring harness and i have spark. B ut ohm tested harness and everthing is good. Was told it could be the cdi unit ,because they do fail.Checked for grounding to the frame and it's shows no faults

Re: no spark

thanks guys

the ignition circuit i guess is normally open and grounds the 'white' wire to stop the motor ? the schematic in the Clymer book is so small i can barely read it.

a couple years ago i had a wire break to the remote trim switch, in the harness a foot from the cowl. what a hassle to find the point of the break. had to open the whole thing up. but in this case i think i can rule a broken wire out.

hopefully the weather clears up soon so i can look at it. if there is any hurricane up here it will need to be running so i can take it up out of the water.
