Re: No Spark?

All there is to your ignition system is the coils, points and condensers. Are the points adjusted to
.020, coils aligned with the bosses, no shorted wires?

yes the points are adjusted and coils aligned right but the spark comes and goes everynow and then so I think something is still grounding out the spark and acting like a kill switch. but i still dont know so anymore help would be great.

Re: No Spark?

I'd suggest you disattach the kill switch wires at the knife connectors, tape the ends coming from the points so they can't ground to anything and see if you have spark. If you decide to run the motor you can kill it with the choke or unpluging the sparkplug wires. If you don't have spark return after this, reexamine the wire connections to the points from the condesers and grounds. If you'll google...bringing a 1956 15 hp. johnson back to life...parts four and five cover the ignition with some good diagrams of how things should look. Any metal part of a connector going to the points that comes into contact with the armature plate or the points adjustment screw can ground the points.

Re: No Spark?

well i pulled everything out and put it all back together again to see if i missed something and when i got it all back together again the bottom cylinder had intermitten spark and top had none but i good hear it clicking as if it was sparking but nothing was coming out of the plugs so does that mean that its arcing out somewhere.

Re: No Spark?

Yes it could mean that. You have better hearing than I as I doubt I would be able to hear it at all unless I got my ear dangerously close. LOL. Try firing it up in the dark. If you have spark going to ground somewhere it is much easier to spot it in the dark of night. As above you might also check your points and coil wires if they are touching anything that moves the insulation can wear off rather quickly. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: No Spark?

You obvioulsy do not have everything put back together properly.

The points are gapped separatly at the high side of the breaker cam.

Look over the diagrams of the universal magneto. There are real simple.

The spark plug leads have to be screwed into the coil, leave a little bare wire sticking out. Make sure that the center conductor of the plug lead in is contact with the center point in the coil.

Make sure you have the correct wire grounded on the coil.

Best to start from scratch and double check as you go.

I had a similar problem and found that the spark plug lead was bad...replaced with new ones and all is well..keep us posted as to what you find.

Re: No Spark?

when i originally replaced everything i used a mettalic core wires and it ran great then the wires went out on me so i put back the original wires and got spark again but it ran really rough so i bought new copper core wires and now i am not getting any or hardly and spark so i will have to do a complete do over and take it all apart and put back together again.
