you need at least 12 volts to the purple wire on the coil.

no<br />but it could screw up and kill spark<br />check or replace regap points if points not the problem pull plug on esa

i have 3.8vlts on power side of coil.<br />trace wire to alt, they splice together at alt<br />is that right or should i run new line

That is where the splice is located. Disconnect that wire from the + side of the coil and recheck the voltage. It should be higher than the 3.8 V you have
