I have a 1989 M/C 2.5L serial #C388528, and the points are sparking but there is no spark at the plugs.
What should I be looking for ?
Thanks !

Re: No spark

Thanks, sure do appreicate the serial number.
Your getting spark at the coil, next have a look at the cap and rotor. If they look clean, pull the coil wire and see if you get spark (should be blue/white and be able to spark out about 1/2 inch.

If no spark - Check voltage at coil (pos) should be 6V or more with key in run position and 12V while cranking.
If voltage is good - and had no spark at coil, replace coil.

If you had spark at the coil - and you had no spark at plug wire ends, replace plug wires.

Let us know what you found

Re: No spark

OK I have 12 volts at the + side of the coil and same wile cranking. I am trying to start this motor with out an alternator does that matter ? I just want to hear this motor start up , before putting any $$ in to it .
Thanks

Re: No spark

As long as the battery is charged, then it doesn't matter if there is no alternator. Have you confirmed you have spark from the coil?

There is no spark from the coil but the points are sparking, can the coil be bad ??
Thanks

Most likely.

My preferred method of confirming a coil good or faulty is...
1. Remove all wires from both terminals of the coil.
2. Have a spark plug in a single lead with one end of the lead plugged into the top of the coil and the spark plug on a GOOD ground on the engine block.
3. Connect a short length of wire to the coil -, and another length of wire from the battery positive directly to the coil +.
4. Rapidly tap the wire from the coil - onto the engine block and observe the spark plug. Each time the wire comes off the engine block, the plug should spark.

If you get a good spark with that test, the coil is good. If no spark, coil is bad.....

Dark is the best time to be testing for sparks...

achris;
Thank you very much, your coil test proved the coil was bad. New coil and it starts right up.
Thanks again !
